Draculino Interview From IBJJF Worlds 2011 – Saturday

What an amazing turnout at worlds this year as competitors show up in record-breaking numbers. For those of us who couldn’t make it, thank God for the guys at Budovideos.com who are streaming the event live and for photographers Dan Rod and Ivan Trindade. Dan and Ivan caught some amazing images for Graciemag.com on saturaday at worlds including this emotional picture showing 3 generations of Gracie Barra students celebrating together.

Poppa Rotzee:
There is an amazing image at Graciemag showing you celebrating with an emotional Romulo Barral, what was going on in the photo?

Draculino:
We were celebrating Felipe Carsalade ( Gracie Barra Belo Horizonte Purple Belt, now Brown) gold medals on the weight class and absolute.

NOTE TO READERS: Felipe Carsalade Pena recently moved to the Los Angeles area from Brazil to train with Rômulo Barral. Felipe has been on fire lately. He smashed through 4 opponents in the medium heavy division at the Samurai Pro and closed out the bracket with Morizi. In an interview about the tournament he was quoted saying he thought he had faced ” tough opponents” and felt that the tournament was a “Good warm up for worlds”.

Pena also won the 2011 pan medium heavy division after 6 tough fights and the open division at the Phoenix Open. It is has truly been a good year for Felipe and I see nothing but good things for him in the future.

Poppa Rotzee:
How do you feel about worlds so far this year?

Draculino:
Great competition. Its always fun to come out here and feel the intensity and see all my friends. This is the best technical level tournament of all.

Poppa Rotzee:
Yes, worlds is amazing and extremely exciting, especially on sunday during finals. The crowd really gets your blood going and it is something that every serious jiu-jitsu practitioner should come out and experience.

Poppa Rotzee:
3. Romulo suffered a tuff loss, what do you think went wrong?

Draculino:
Romulo was not in his day. It happens. But the loss was really controversial, since the opponent, a very good fighter, stalled tons with the infamous 50/50 guard.

Poppa Rotzee:
I was really hoping to see Romulo take the gold in absolute, I truly think he deserves it. That guy is unbelievably humble and dedicated to his art. It seems Romulo didn’t let it distract him, he put on an amazing performance in his division on Saturday. Now with Romulo out, everyone seems to be looking towards Rudolfo to take the absolute..who do you have your money on?

Draculino:
I agree…my money is on Rudolfo. No doubt.

Poppa Rotzee:
Brandon “Wolverine” Mullins recently won the 2010 No Gi World Championship and has turn his eye to mundails, he is very focused and put on a great performance so far on Saturday after finishing a tough opponent with an triangle armbar. How do you think he stacks up in this weight class?

Draculino:
He had a great performance. Submission on a tough Brazilian opponent. The best in the world are there and tomorrow morning, he faces one of the best ever on that weight division. Bruno Malfacine.

Poppa Rotzee:
Any message you want to say to your students back home?

Draculino:
Thanks for the support and I miss you guys. I am very excited for the new school. We have some amazing things planned for the upcoming year so stay tuned and I will see you when I get back!

Special thanks to Budovideos.com for streaming the event that I happily donated $10 to see, and to the Graciemag.com and the photographers Dan Rod and Ivan Trindade, you guys are amazing!
