It was announced earlier today by UFC President Dana White via Twitter that Tito Ortiz will replace the injured Phil Davis at UFC 133 to face Rashad Evans.
The two fighters met once before at UFC 73, fighting to a draw. Ortiz lost a pivotal point in the bout by repeatedly grabbing the cage.
Lyoto Machida was first rumored as a late replacement for Phil Davis, but he declined the invitation for a rematch. He cited reasons being it would be unprofessional to take a fight on such short notice, and his decision weighed heavily on the opportunity to fight for the title if victorious once again over Evans.
Tito Ortiz ended a severe win drought dating back to his loss to Chuck Liddell in 2006 with a submission victory over Ryan Bader at UFC 132.
Rashad Evans is coming off a lengthy layoff due to injury dating back to his victory over Quinton “Rampage” Jackson in May of 2010.
UFC 133 will take place August 6, 2011 at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, PA.
