One of my favorite ways to pass the half guard is to dominate the near side underhook. This is one technique I use all the time at my martial arts school in Poughkeepsie. The reason this is so effective is that most grapplers don’t concern themselves with the close arm at all, instead they focus all their attention on maintaining the far side underhook.
I first saw this guard pass while watching George St. Pierre fight Thiago Alves in the UFC. I was then fortunate enough to learn this pass from John Danaher at Renzo Gracie’s New York City academy.
